Historic Yorkstone path renovation - Thornton-in-Craven

A sympathetic renovation of the main Yorkstone pathway leading in to St Mary's Church - Thornton-in-Craven, carefully undertaken to retain the character and appearance of its traditional setting.

The existing stone flags were lifted, number and assessed with 90% retention. The pathway was then carefully reconstructed, correcting failed areas and uneven levels while maintaining the natural variation and aged appearance of the Yorkstone.

Particular attention was given to levels, falls and detailing, creating a safer and more durable route to the church without losing the character that comes with an established historic pathway.

Working with 90% existing and 10% suitably reclaimed flag stones requires a different approach to new construction. Rather than making the path appear newly built, the objective was to re-lay and repair what was already there, allowing the finished work to remain sympathetic to the church and surrounding landscape.
