Sunken Garden - Hellifield
A thoughtfully engineered sunken seating area, transforming an otherwise ordinary section of lawn into a sheltered and intimate space for relaxing and entertaining.
The design was carefully integrated in to the existing garden, with the retaining structure faced in reclaimed walling stone, chosen to complement the established stone boundaries and surrounding Yorkshire landscape. The intention was to create a space that felt as though it had always belonged.
Much of the complexity lies beneath the finished garden. Extensive groundworks included excavation and retaining structures, relocation of the mains electrical supply, new power and lighting infrastructure and discreet aluminium slot drainage.
The surrounding ground was then regraded, soils improved and the lawn reinstated leaving very little indication of the substantial engineering required to create the space.
A combination of traditional materials, careful detailing and modern construction techniques has created a garden that should settle and improve with age.
